Elementary Classroom
1. I have seen my host teacher integrate art into her classroom on two occasions. The first time my teacher had students make an analog drawing to respond to jazz music. The students were instructed to trace a line that expressed their feelings upon listening to jazz. I participated in this activity, and I thought it was a great way for students to be thinking about what they were hearing. My teacher also gives students the option of responding to a book by drawing an important scene in the book. Students just use crayons markers, and colored pencils to draw a picture on a large poster.
2. Ms. Adams has not related these art integration activities to a big idea. I think the book response drawing activity has potential to be connected to a big idea such as “Story” or “Fictional Character.” In the jazz response activity, students are relating auditory sounds to visualize thinking. They are translating what they hear and think into a visual expression for others to see as well.
3. To encourage students to go deeper in their thinking for the book response drawing, I would first relate this project to a big idea. Students will then be able to work within this idea to think more creatively about how they can show their understanding of the book. Relating artwork to a big idea will challenge the students more than just asking them to draw a picture. Thinking of our projects in terms of a big idea have challenged my work this semester.
