Start of Semester
1. How do you envision using art in your classroom?
I envision using art in my classroom to enhance learning in every subject in my classroom. I want art to feel like a safe outlet for my students to express thoughts, opinions, interests, and abilities. Reflecting on my own art experience in elementary school, I realize that I lacked confidence in art. Instead of seeing art as a safe means of expressing my own imagination, I just wanted the teacher to be happy with my work. I hope my future students will think of art as something they do for themselves rather than something that they have to do because the teacher asks for it. Art should be a liberating task that allows students to share their thinking and creativity.
2. What do you know about integrated learning / integration?
Last semester my host teacher in field told me that if she used full integration in her classroom, the principal should be able to walk into her room and not know which subject she was teaching at the time. As I observed my host teacher throughout the semester, I saw her bring this statement to fruition. For example she often wrote as much in science as she did in writing workshop. To my best knowledge, integration is bringing all disciplines together.
3. Rate your comfort level in making art, and discuss.
Uneasy 1 2 3 4 5 Comfortable
Like I said in my answer to number one, I always wanted my teachers to approve of my art rather than seeing art as an expression of my own thinking. I also have never really thought of myself as an extremely creative person, so I hope this class will help change my thinking in that way!
4. Rate your comfort level in analyzing and talking about art, and discuss.
Uneasy 1 2 3 4 5 Comfortable
Although I am excited to use art in my classroom and give my students a different art experience than I had as an elementary school student, I need help to know how to use art across all subjects. I also want to gain insight into what are meaningful art experiences that students will enjoy rather than art that seems like a meaningless task. My favorite subject throughout school was writing, so I do enjoy critical thinking and analysis; however, I could use guidance in how I can apply skills I use in writing to art.

End of Semester
1. How do you envision using art in your classroom?
I envision using art in every academic discipline in my classroom. I have learned in this class that art has a place in the general classroom. Art also gives kids a way of expression that challenges their thinking and gets them to think in a way that is different than what they might naturally do. Art broadens students' horizons and forces them think about what information they receive. I have also seen art successfully integrated in my field classroom, and I am convinced it enhances learning in every discipline.
2. What do you know about integrated learning / integration?
Integrated learning means bringing multiple disciplines together in teaching one lesson or unit. In an integrated classroom, teachers intertwine different subjects. My field teacher last semester said that if her classroom is fully integrated, someone who walked into the room would not be able to tell if she was teaching writing, math, music, art, or literacy. Integration connects disciplines to one another and makes for a more influential learning experience than what could be achieved when teaching subjects in isolation.
3. Rate your comfort level in making art, and discuss.
Uneasy 1 2 3 4 5 Comfortable
I am more comfortable in making art because this course has introduced me to several different art making methods. I am confident enough to implement these different methods in my classroom, but I still don't feel confident in using them myself. When I have a class, I am going to have to laugh alongside my students with the artwork I will make for examples when necessary. Art is still not my strongest area as a student!
4. Rate your comfort level in analyzing and talking about art, and discuss.
Uneasy 1 2 3 4 5 Comfortable
I feel much more confident in talking about and analyzing art. I want to bring art into my classroom in any way I can now- especially for VTS. Although I will not be an art teacher, I have experienced this semester how art can be related to any subject and any classroom. I enjoy talking about the details in art pieces and learning about different artists more than I ever have.
